alaska was happy. she had just logged off her computer from her conversation with dominic, and her mind whirled with possibilities and schemed and calculated. avalon was dominic’s sister. perfect. alaska had to say, she hated the girl with a lot. alaska was the type who took some shit very personally, and rumors and smack talk were one of those ridiculous things. she heard avalon was talking crap about her one day, and it all went up from there. she could remember everything that happened that day, clear as the blue sky, as if it all happened yesterday. she basically stormed out of her tour bus and found avalon sitting with a group of people getting ready for a show. she went right up to her and accused her of talking shit, which lead into a huge blowup, which lead to alaska being lead out of the building by security. it happened fast, and the two girls haven’t liked each other since. you could say that it was alaska’s doing, really, but alaska had a very short temper, and once you got her going, she didn’t stop.
and, above all, dominic was a cutie. she had always eyed him whenever they went to parties and saw him there, or if he walked by on the sidewalk or if he had somehow winded up at one of her shows or her at one of his. they would always trade smiles and have tiny chats. mostly, ‘how are yous?’ ‘oh, been busy.’ ‘yeah, we should hang out.’ ‘soon! promise?’ ‘hell yes.’ ‘i’ll babysit if you want.’ ‘oh, sure.’ ‘alright. i’ma go drink now. bye.’ ‘bye.’ yeah, that was pretty much how it went. she had always thought to herself in the back of her mind about how cute he was, but she never really approached him like that. well now, it seems like she should, now. after all, she was getting a cute guy, and annoying the hell out of the girl she disliked. could it get any better?
as alaska ushered around the tourbus gathering her stuff, drake white came to mind.
she hadn’t thought about him in so long, and it was a surprise to have him suddenly appear in her thoughts. not a pleasant one, though. she pursed her lips at the thought of him, stopping momentarily to try and push him out, but her mind seemed to keep wandering back to him as she got ready to go out. drake had been her high school sweetheart. she had been with him for two years, and he was her everything. but, after a while, she started to feel a type of… distance. she had no idea what it was, but he never said anything about it, so she respected that and left him alone. he was under a lot of stress: his brother had just fallen ill to cancer, so she was always there for him but she made sure he had his distance to gather his own thoughts.
one day, he said that he felt sick, so he stayed home from school. it was about a week before summer, and the winter before he had given her a promise ring. before he started acting strange, before his brother was diagnosed with cancer. she had been so happy in love then, and she was sure he was too. but during lunch, she decided to go see him, bring him some soup, like the future-wife she was supposed to be. she left school at lunch, seeing as, being a senior, she had those kinds of powers, and she went home and pulled out one of her family’s old but special recipes. he didn’t exactly say what he had, only that ‘he felt sick that he thinks he was going to stay home today’. she spent an hour making it, and then she drove over to his house.
drake’s brother was in the hospital, and his parents were at work. alaska didn’t think anything was wrong and let herself in the front door, as she had many times before. she had the tupperware bowl of soup in her hands, and she snuck up the stairs to surprise him. she was outside the door when she heard the giggle. it obviously wasn’t drake’s laugh, and alaska paused. she then opened the door, and found drake in bed with a girl from their school. a pretty rich blonde sophomore. drake had looked over, and his face filled with shock. she could remember the way he said her name. “alaska.” so calmly, like she had been annoying him or something. she remembered her fingers sliding between the lid and the bowl itself, and then she remembered seeing it flying all over drake and the girl, and then fleeing down the stairs and driving home like a bat out of hell.
she had gone home and cried. she remembered doing that. she wouldn’t leave her bed for two whole days. she wouldn’t eat. she just slept and cried and slept some more. drake tried to see her three times, but she wouldn’t open her door for him. and when she finally went back to school, she taped the promise ring to his locker and spray painted the locker with the words, ‘prick’. he took the ring down but the words stayed there for a week until the janitor got around to scrubbing it off. everyone knew what happened, and alaska graduated high school without really acknowledging those last few weeks.
alaska snapped out of the memory, shaking every thought of that bastard out of her head as the door to the tourbus slammed behind her. she was powerwalking now, determined to keep the bad thoughts out of her mind. she walked down to the doughnut shop that was right down the street and entered the air-conditioned shop. she went right up to the counter and was already reaching into her pocket for money as she waited for someone to come to the register. “come on, come on people,” she muttered to herself, eyes flickering for any sign of life in the shop other then herself. when a tall asian kid showed up, eying her with interest, she hardly paid any attention to him. “doughnut holes. a dozen,” she ordered, slamming the money down on the table. “and two coffees.” the kid took her money, grumbled about something, then went off to do her bidding.
alaska tapped her fingers impatiently on the counter, staring of aimlessly into space. a few moments later, he handed her a large square pink box filled with doughnut holes and two coffees piled on top. she eyeballed the weight but shrugged it off and let the kid pile the load into her arms. “have a nice day,” the kid called after her halfheartedly, but he was replied with the ringing of the bell as she stepped out of the shop. she was careful of the steaming hot paper cups of coffee that were right by her neck. she felt the steam and swallowed uneasily, carefully setting one foot infront of the other, and swearing to god that if anyone were to jump on her at that moment, so help her, she was going to flip the fuck out. but nobody did, and she soon found herself at dominic’s doorstep. well, tourbus-step.
alaska inhaled sharply and glanced around, puzzled for a moment. then she lifted her foot and banged on the door three sharp, loud times, hoping that she wouldn’t have to stand there long. her arms were beginning to get weak, and she did not want to have dominic open the door and have her be standing there empty handed with glazed dougnuts and coffee spilled all over her.
