Dominic had woken up early. Not out of choice however. He could have easily sleeped until noon or one if his son, Auggie, wouldn't have came and woke him up. Auggie had crawled out of his 'big boy' bed that Dom had gotten for him. It had gates on it though so he wouldn't fall out. However, he was very skilled in crawling out of it when he wanted to. Not to mention he also became very skilled at crawling into Dom's bed especially in the middle of the night. Which he had done every night he stayed with Dom. Not that he minded much. He liked having someone actually want to be around him. That sounded a bit weird, but Dom liked the feeling of his son needing him. The only think that made his stomach flip around was in the morning when he woke up and caught a glimps of Auggie's dark red head of hair. He always thought of Penny in his half asleep state. Hell, he always thought of Penny when he looked at his son. How could he not? Auggie resembled her more than Dom. Except for his eyes. Auggie's eyes were a dark blue, like Dom's, compared to Penny's light blue eyes. It made him smile, knowing that Aug had at least a little bit of his father in him.
Feeling a pair of small hands on his cheeks, he opened his eyes and looked into a pair identical of his own. He smiled slightly as Auggie smiled down at him. Dominic sat up and lifted his son up with him. Sometimes it was still crazy to him that he helped create this small life. Even though he didn't want to get up, he knew he should. Penny was coming over today. They were all going out as a family. Even though they weren't together anymore, they wanted to raise Auggie in a good environment and not one were there was constant bickering between two people who were once in love. He had seen some friends grow up in that and they had a hard time on many occasions. He had always been there for his friends, but it was hard for him to give advice because he himself had never gone through that. He just knew he didn't want to have to make life hard on his son. He didn't want holidays and such to be complicated. No one needed that. Not Dom, not Penny and definitely not Auggie.
Carrying Auggie to the kitchen, Dom set him in a chair and pulled out a couple bowls and the box of cheerios. He poured some into both bowls and then went for the milk. He poured milk into his own bowl but when he went to pour some into Auggie's, Auggie covered his bowl and wouldn't let him, almost spilling the cereal all over the place. "Okay, little man. No milk then." Dom said with a laugh. He watched Auggie begin to pick the cheerios out with his hands and begin eating them one by one. Dom laughed again before turning to his own breakfast. He ran a hand through his hair and yawned. He really didn't want to be up yet. Cleaning up the breakfast table once they were finished, he looked to the clock. Ten Thirty. He was sure Penny would be there within the hour if not sooner, so he simply had to keep Aug busy until then. Grinning with an idea he turned to his son. "Auggie, want to play a game? I'll teach you. It's fun." His son nodded Dom smiled again. The two of them went to the living area of his apartment and Dominic cleared off his coffee table. Going to the bathroom, he pulled out a set of small dixie cups and took them to the coffee table.
Dominic filled the cups with apple juice (he decided against the fruit punch because if one spilt, he would be screwed trying to get the red coloring out of his carpet) and set them up in the traditional beer pong style. Yes. Dominic was teaching his son how to play pong. He had to learn from someone and why not the best right? His son would be a champ, that was for sure. After setting everything up at one end of the small coffee table, he went to stand at the other end and stood behind Auggie. "Okay, Aug, now what you have to do is through this little ball at the cups and try to make it in. I'll help you. Ready?" Dominic asked and Auggie nodded. Dom took Auggie's hand in his own and helped him hold the ball. Then he helped him launch the ball to the other end of the table where the cups were located. The ball went into the first cup and Auggie clapped excitedly. Dom gave his son a high five and went to retrieve the ball. He would definitely be able to keep the boy entertained this way. Auggie seemed to love it. Like father like son he supposed.

we still live in the same town well don't we? ---but i don't see you around anymore. penny looked at her bedroom clock for the third time in twenty minutes. she had been sitting up in bed watching reruns of bad reality shows and the occasional infomercial all morning, waiting for it to be time to get ready to go over to dominic’s. she had barely slept last night, having gone out to some party with some friends to have some much needed fun. she had come home, passed out for a few hours only to be woken up by what she thought was auggie calling for her, forgetting he was at his dad’s for the night. she was used to him climbing into bed with her in the middle of the night and taking up most the room on the bed or waking her up before the sun was out. only later did she realize she had fallen asleep with her television on and some kid on tv was calling for his mom. after that she couldn‘t have gone back to sleep even if she wanted to. by now penny was more than anxious to get going but she didn’t want to show up there before dom was even awake, she knew how he liked sleeping in. she also didn’t want to let him think she was anxious about leaving auggie with him.
it’s not like penny didn’t trust him, because she did, she really did. it was more like she just didn’t like leaving her son with anyone overnight, even her mother. but that was mostly because she was convinced her mom was making him watch those your baby can read videos to further improve his chances at getting into yale or teaching him quantum physics or all about napoleon. no she’d much rather dominic take him for the night than her mother. deciding she didn’t actually need a power juicer, penny turned shut off the tv, silencing the infomercial, and dragged herself out of bed and into her bathroom. she showered quickly, erasing the traces of last night, got out and threw on her clothes and makeup. she skipped breakfast, she still felt a little woozy after last night and anything she made would probably make her feel worse. she got into her car and pulled out onto the street.
she was both excited and nervous for family fun day. penny was sure it would be fine, that her and dominic would get along fine and they’d be a happy not together but still together family. they had decided when they broke up that no matter what auggie was the priority. they would give him as normal a family as they could, which meant no fighting in front of him and that they would spend as much time together as they could. she knew how much she loved growing up in a close knit family and didn’t want to deprive auggie of the same childhood. even if they fought sometimes she didn’t mind having dom around. she honestly couldn’t imagine not having him in her life after all that passed between them. they had been in love, they had a child and despite their relationship not working out and her sometimes wanted to smack him, she still liked his company. well when he wasn’t being stupid or cursing in front of auggie. even if she didn’t admit to it, and probably never would, she still loved him a little. she couldn’t not, without him she would never have had her son.
pulling into a parking spot in front of his building after a rather uneventful drive, penny got out of her car and made her way to dominic’s apartment. she stopped in front of the door and knocked on it a few times. she wasn’t one to just let herself in, not that she didn’t think about it. hell she would have loved to barg into his house, but she respected his privacy. she stood there for a few more moments only a little impatient. “hello dominic.” she said when he finally opened the door. she pushed passed him and made her way into his living room and over to her son.
penny picked auggie up and twirled around with him in her arms, kissing him on his cheek and hugging him to her. stopping she looked him in his eyes, dominic’s eyes, and smiled. “did you miss mommy sweetie? because i missed you a whole lot.” she sat down on the couch with him in her arms and laughed at his grin and insistent nodding. “did you have fun with daddy? i hope he behaved himself and didn’t teach any bad words.” auggie just kept on nodding with that goofy grin plastered on his face. she ruffled his hair and sat him down where he had been playing before. she stood up and was about to turn to talk to dominic when the cups on the table caught her attention. raising an eyebrow she looked from the cups, to auggie, to dominic and back to dominic. “are you corrupting our son by teaching him how to play beer pong?” penny asked grabbing a cup and taking a sip, “with apple juice?”

Dominic had it all set up in the living room. The small coffee table was no where near long enough as a real pong table, but for the size of Auggie and the purpose of simply teaching him the basics, it was perfect. Auggie could learn early and then be ahead of the game. Then when he went to parites, and even though it made Dom cringe slightly because he knew Auggie would someday, he would run the table everytime. It was a good sport to be good at. Dominic knew because he was. It was fun to run the table and pick teams off like flies. Of course, he did lose at times and others did rub it in his face because he was good and losing was very rare. What seemed to be rare anymore was him being at a party. Sure he technically wasn't even allowed to drink because he was only twenty, but he liked to party and normally he did it a lot. However, he had Auggie a lot so parties were out of the question. Not to mention Penny got kind of pissed when she found out that Dom passed Auggie off on someone else so he could go out. Not to mention he always felt bad when he did that. He felt like then the person who was watching Auggie couldn't go out either and that wasn't fair to them. After all, they weren't the ones to have a kid at ninteen.
Dom couldn't help but smile as his son clapped and cheered as the ball sunk into one of the cups. Auggie was so adorable and, as corny or lame as it may sound, Dom fell more and more in love with his son every day. Hearing a knock at the door, he made sure Auggie was good where he was before going and answering it. He knew full well that it would be Penny and he told her over and over she could just come in. She really didn't need to knock. It wasn't like Dom had girls over and they were busy or whatever. But still, Penny knocked everytime. He guessed it was out of respect for his personal space or whatever. He smiled at her. He couldn't help it. The sight of Penny was always bittersweet in a way. He still felt pains here and there. After all, he did love her. But, being able to see her as much as he did made things a little better. "Hello Penny. How are you?" He started, but the end of his sentence kind of trailed off as she pushed past him and headed straight for Auggie. He sighed slightly and simply closed the door, shaking his head a little with a very light laugh. He turned and went to where the two were now, Penny with Auggie in her hands and twirling him around.
He couldn't help but let out a slight laugh at Penny's mention about him teaching him bad words. Of course, Dom had the mouth of a sailor. He had a bad habit of letting some curse words slip around the soon to be two year old here and there. Which, of course, he had done while having Auggie this time. He only hoped that the young boy hadn't picked up on any of them. It wouldn't be a problem until they started actually being said. Then he was sure Penny would rip his head off. Dom would laugh because well, honestly it would be hilarious to hear Auggie running around calling someone a Fuck or a douche bag. He knew it wasn't right, but how would he not be able to laugh at that? It would just be too cute for him to scold Auggie for it. At Penny's question about the apple juice pong, Dom scratched the back of his head slightly and flicked the hair from his face with a swift head movement. "Heh, yeah. Would you rather it be real beer? I mean, I have that too." He teased with a wink. "I'm kidding. But that reminds me, can I get you something to drink?" He asked her as he took a few of the small cups of apple juice and poured them into Auggie's sippycup. He screwed the lid on and handed it to him, "Main Man. Knucks?" Dom asked and held out his fist to Auggie. Auggie in return hit his fist against Dom's. Dominic had just taught him that recently and he couldn't help but laugh. "Thata boy!"
Dominic looked to Penny as he walked over to the kitchen area which looked out on the living room. "Coffe? Water? Soda?" He asked before picking up one of Auggie's travel bags and setting it on the kitchen table. "I packed him juice and some snacks and stuff. I made us some hoagies and a little fruit salad thing. But I mean, If you wanted something else I could make it really fast?" He wasn't normally one to cook dinner or get lunch together but it was different when it came to Auggie and especially Penny. He would get Auggie anything he wanted. He spoiled his son to pieces. And Penny, well, he was still in love with her so obviously he would go to the moon and back. He tried not to let it be too obvious though and he was glad that he had healed for the most part. It used to kill him to be around her and not be able to hug or kiss her or simply hold her. But he had gotten used to it as much as he possibly could and it was no longer practically unbearable. He was glad because it was nice to do this family thing every once in a while. Today they were going on a small picnik and Auggie would be able to play at the playground and be a little kid. It would be relaxing hopefully. Maybe for once things could go smoothly and he and Penny wouldn't argue. But it wasn't likely to go that way, he was sure of it.

we still live in the same town well don't we? ---but i don't see you around anymore. penny was both amused and irritated about the apple juice pong. it was quite funny, it’s not every day a two year old learns beer pong after all, and she had no doubt in her mind he’d be good at it. he was after all their child and they were both rather good at the game. dominic more so then her, but she had won her share of games back in the age of partying , pre-pregnancy. she was however still a little irritated. you just don’t teach a kid apple juice/beer pong, even if it is hilarious. if there was one thing penny hated to do more than anything else, it was having to be the bad guy. and that’s how she had felt lately, like the bad guy. like all she’d been doing was telling everyone to stop doing something they weren’t supposed to do. it was at those times she realized just how much her life had changed. she’d gone from being a carefree teen, high on life and god knows what else, to a thirty year old in a nineteen year old body worried about paying bills and making a good life for her and her son. nine months and twenty hours of labor sure brought change to her world, both good and bad.
she watched dominic scratch the back of his head and flick the hair out of his face and listened to him tease about using real beer. she couldn’t help but think about how cute he was when he was being an idiot, which really didn’t help the situation one bit. “dominic, don’t you think it’s a bit too soon to be teaching auggie these things? as much as an advantage he has now if a random game of juice pong erupts on the playground , i was thinking maybe we’d wait until he’s twenty-one. or never. both work for me.” penny said, cocking her head to the side slightly, a hint of a smile on her lips. she didn’t even want to think about auggie growing up and turning into either of them. how could she, he was her baby and she didn’t want to imagine him any way other than how he was now. he was her little boy who would never get into trouble, well the bad kind of trouble, and would always be small and cute and sweet. she blinked and couldn’t help but laugh when she saw auggie hit his fist against his dads. it was possibly one of the cutest things she’d seen him do. and she had seen him do a lot of cute things.
penny followed dominic into the kitchen area and hopped up onto the counter nest to him. she kept one eye on auggie in the living room sipping his juice and playing with the empty cups. “coffee would be wonderful actually.” she replied. chewing on her thumb nail, she watched him pick up one of auggie’s travel bags and talk about the he packed for them. “no everything you packed is perfect, really.“ she replied when he mentioned making some she was kind of surprised actually that he had packed things to eat, and tried not to let it show on her face. she’d totally spaced bringing something for them to eat on their family outing, and probably would have suggested going to some fast food place, she wasn’t much of a cook herself. the fact that dominic did think of it made her smile. she really loved it when he did little things unexpected things like that. it showed her he was actually growing up and being the father she knew he could be. she knew lately she hadn’t been giving him a lot of credit for the good job he was doing, something his sister avalon didn’t fail to let her know.
she felt guilty really, whenever avalon told her she was being a bitch by not letting dominic see auggie all the time. it’s not like she meant to make it that way, hell if dom said he wanted auggie for the rest of the month she’d probably say okay. okay maybe she wouldn’t for a whole month but for as long as he wanted she’d gladly hand him over. she never intended to be the mother who never let her kid see his dad, and she didn’t plan on letting it happen anymore. dominic was always so nice when avalon was a bitch to penny as well. whenever she started in on her, he tried to make her stop and penny really appreciated it. hopping off the counter she made her way over to him, stood on her tiptoes and kissed his cheek. “i know I don’t say it enough but, thanks dom. you’re a good guy and I don’t give you enough credit.” she moved her bangs out of her eyes and leaned up against the counter. maybe today would be better than she thought, maybe they would get along, or maybe it was wishful thinking.
